Stainless Steel Ice Cube Trays: Better Ice, No Plastic Taste
Why switch from plastic
Plastic ice trays crack, warp, and hold onto whatever smells are in your freezer. Stainless steel does none of that. It will not absorb odours or flavours, it lasts for years, and the ice comes out clean and neutral tasting, which matters when the drink is as simple as water over ice.
How to get clearer ice
Cloudy ice comes from trapped air and minerals in the water. For clearer cubes, fill the tray with filtered water, or with water you have boiled and let cool. Freeze it slowly toward the back of the freezer rather than near the door. It will not be crystal clear like a cocktail bar, but it will look and taste noticeably better.
The lever, and why it helps
Both our trays use a central lever. Instead of twisting the tray and scattering cubes across the counter, you lift the lever once and it cracks the whole batch loose in a single motion. It is faster, tidier, and easier on your hands, especially first thing in the morning.
The single tray makes 18 cubes. If you go through more, the double tray makes 36 and comes with a stand to stack them neatly in the freezer.
Caring for them
Rinse after each use and dry fully before storing, which keeps rust spots away in humid kitchens. They are dishwasher safe, though a quick hand rinse is usually all they need. Skip harsh scrubbers so the finish stays smooth.
More than plain ice
Steel trays are great for freezing more than water. Try freezing coffee for iced lattes that do not go weak, or herbs and stock in cube form for cooking. For drinks to pour over your ice, our sun tea, switchel, and egg cream recipes are a good place to start.
