The New York Egg Cream contains neither egg nor cream — it's a magical combination of chocolate syrup, cold milk, and seltzer water that creates a frothy, fizzy, chocolate drink like nothing else. Born in the Jewish delis of Brooklyn in the late 1800s, it remains a beloved New York City institution and the ultimate nostalgic soda fountain treat.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons chocolate syrup (Fox's U-Bet is traditional)
  • 1/4 cup very cold whole milk
  • 3/4 cup cold seltzer water

Instructions

  1. Pour chocolate syrup into a tall glass
  2. Add the cold milk and stir briefly
  3. Tilt the glass and pour seltzer forcefully to create a frothy head
  4. Stir quickly from the bottom — just once or twice
  5. Drink immediately while fizzy
