New Orleans Chicory Coffee

New Orleans Chicory Coffee

Bold and Distinctive

New Orleans chicory coffee is a beloved Southern tradition dating back to the Civil War when coffee was scarce and chicory root was used as a substitute. Today it's a deliberate choice — the roasted chicory adds a rich, slightly bitter, earthy depth to the coffee that's become inseparable from New Orleans culture. Traditionally served with hot milk as café au lait at the famous Café Du Monde.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons dark roast coffee with chicory blend
  • 1 cup water
  • Hot milk or steamed milk
  • Sugar to taste

Instructions

  1. Brew the chicory coffee blend using a drip method or French press
  2. Heat milk until steaming
  3. Pour equal parts coffee and hot milk into a mug
  4. Sweeten to taste
  5. Serve with beignets for the authentic experience
