Mugicha (Japanese Barley Tea)

Mugicha (Japanese Barley Tea)

Cool and Refreshing. Mugicha is Japan's quintessential summer drink — a roasted barley tea served ice-cold. Every Japanese household keeps a pitcher in the refrigerator during the hot months. Its mild, roasty flavor and zero caffeine make it perfect for the whole family.

Ingredients

  • 1 mugicha tea bag (or 1/4 cup loose roasted barley)
  • 8 cups water

Instructions

  1. Bring water to a boil.
  2. Add the mugicha tea bag or loose barley.
  3. Boil for 3–5 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
  5. Remove tea bag, transfer to a pitcher, and refrigerate until cold.

Tips

  • For cold-brew mugicha, place the tea bag in cold water overnight in the fridge.
  • Best consumed within 2 days.
