Genmaicha (Brown Rice Tea)

Genmaicha (Brown Rice Tea)

Toasty and Unique. Genmaicha combines green tea with roasted and popped brown rice, creating a uniquely nutty, toasty flavor with a light body. Originally a tea of the common people, it's now beloved across Japan for its comforting warmth and popcorn-like aroma.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons genmaicha tea leaves
  • 2 cups water (80°C / 175°F)

Instructions

  1. Heat water to 80°C (175°F) — not boiling.
  2. Place genmaicha in a teapot.
  3. Pour hot water over the tea.
  4. Steep for 1–2 minutes.
  5. Strain and serve immediately.

Tips

  • Do not over-steep or the rice flavor becomes too dominant.
  • Pairs wonderfully with Japanese rice crackers (senbei).
